Women's Health Symposium

New Realities in Women's Health:
Choices and Challenges for Young Jewish Women

On June 1, the Chicago Center for Jewish Genetic Disorders sponsored a symposium, "New Realities in Women's Health: Choices and Challenges for Young Jewish Women," which explored issues integral to the health of Jewish women between the ages of 20-40. The symposium featured a panel on bioethics and workshops on the issues of infertility, hereditary cancer, and Jewish genetic disorders.

Over 125 attendees listened as keynote speaker Lt. Gov. Corinne Wood (ret.) spoke on her first hand experience as both a breast cancer survivor and an advocate for women's health. A panel on Jewish tradition and "high tech" health care presented different perspectives on how the traditions of Judaism interface with contemporary medicine. Closing speaker Rochelle Shoretz, a breast cancer survivor and the creator of Sharsheret, a breast cancer support group for young Jewish women, spoke on the importance of providing support to other young Jewish women with similar concerns during times of health crises.
