What is it: Newborn screening involves state mandated testing of all newborns for certain disorders. Its purpose is to identify affected individuals so that treatment can be started as soon as possible before permanent damage has occurred. It is done by obtaining a blood sample from a heel prick after the baby is over 24 hours old, but less than 7 days old.
When is it done: Newborn screening is performed routinely at birth, unless specifically refused by the parents in writing.
Benefits of testing: Newborn screening permits treatment before permanent damage has occurred.
