Your Body, Your Future:
A Guide to Women's Health in
the Age of Genetics and Technology

Focus on Family History

You may feel that genetics, and especially family history, has little practical application in your clinical practice. The family history, however, can help health care professionals identify increased risks for inherited and common diseases and ultimately, alter medical management. The following links will provide you with information on the importance of taking a family history with every single patient, as well as a variety of resources and questionnaires for use in your everyday practice. College students may not know the answers to many of your questions, and therefore discussing with them the importance of family history and ways to open communication with their relatives may be helpful.
