The Chicago Board of Rabbis and the Chicago Center for Jewish Genetic Disorders are collaborating on a project to increase awareness about Jewish genetic disorders among pre-marital couples.
It is our goal to share vital information regarding the Jewish population’s higher carrier frequency rates for several incurable, debilitating disorders, several of which can lead to fatality among children at very young ages. Knowledge is the key to prevention of Jewish genetic disorders. Given the array of new technologies, early detection of carrier status allows couples to exercise a wide range of options. If carrier status is detected during pregnancy, options are fewer and decision-making becomes much more difficult.
Below are some educational materials in PDF file format. The information sheet gives an overview of nine Jewish genetic disorders with facts about screening, frequency rates, and treatment options. The resource card provides a list of screening and testing locations, support agencies and helpful websites. The Action Card for Rabbis outlines steps you can take to make it easy to include this topic as part of your standard pre-marital counseling session. We encourage you to present a similar packet of information about Jewish genetic disorders to young couples during pre-marital counseling. The Center will provide you with a supply of packets at your request, or you can download them in PDF file format below.
